What is Lean Manufacturing?

Lean Manufacturing is a method to reduce waste and increase efficiency using structured methods. They were created by Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan in the 1980s. The primary goal was to make products with lower costs and maintain high quality. Lean manufacturing seeks to eliminate unnecessary steps and activities in the production process. It consists of five basic elements: pull systems, continuous improvement, just-in-time, kaizen (continuous change), and 5S. Pull systems allow customers to get exactly what they want without having to do extra work. Continuous improvement is the continuous improvement of existing processes. Just-in–time refers when components or materials are delivered immediately to their intended destination. Kaizen stands for continuous improvement. Kaizen can be described as a process of making small improvements continuously. Last but not least, 5S is for sort. These five elements are combined to give you the best possible results.

Lean Production System

The lean production system is based on six key concepts:

  • Flow - focus on moving material and information as close to customers as possible;
  • Value stream mapping - Break down each stage in a process into distinct tasks and create an overview of the whole process.
  • Five S's - Sort, Set In Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain;
  • Kanban - use visual signals such as colored tape, stickers, or other visual cues to keep track of inventory;
  • Theory of constraints: Identify bottlenecks and use lean tools such as kanban boards to eliminate them.
  • Just-in time - Get components and materials delivered right at the point of usage;
  • Continuous improvement - make incremental improvements to the process rather than overhauling it all at once.
